A tertiary solvent containing chlorinated cobalt dicarbollide, polyethylene
glycol and diphenylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide was evaluated in differe
nt non-nitroaromatic diluents for the separation of cesium, strontium, acti
nides and rare earth elements from acidic liquid radioactive waste. Deconta
mination factors of >95% for Cs, 99.7% for Sr, and 99.99% for actinides wer
e achieved in four successive batch contacts using actual radioactive waste
. Pilot plant testing in centrifugal contactors using simulated wastes, has
demonstrated removal of >99% of all targeted ions.
