Yields of formation of elemental sulfur upon radiation-induced decompo
sition of sulfur dioxide in aqueous solutions were measured depending
on the sulfur dioxide concentration, pH, and the amount of sulfuric ac
id added. The dose dependence of sulfur formation exhibits an inductio
n period and a clearly defined maximum. It was found experimentally th
at reactions of reducing species and products of SO2 reduction play a
significant role in radiolysis of sulfur dioxide.
