Two cases of bartonella endocarditis are described: one in a 55 year o
ld homeless alcoholic man, caused by Bartonella quintana; the other in
a 41 year old male with a history of exposure to cat fleas, caused by
B henselae. Serological testing and polymerase chain reaction of the
excised valves were used to identify the organisms. False positive ser
ology for chlamydia was detected in one case.
