This article describes how, extended reference service is offered within th
e electronic environment at the University of Central Florida Library. If a
lso provides an observation on how the new technologies, specifically elect
ronic discussion lists, facilitate reporting and program implementation wit
hin the library community as a whole. In-depth, one-on-one reference servic
e has been in existence under a variety of names and formats for a number o
f years. Some of the underlying principles, alternative practices, and defi
nitions of a successful program are summarized from discussion lists and pu
blished literature.
