The mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of N-methyldiphenylamine-4-sulfoni
c acid (MDPASA) in weakly acid (10(-3) M H2SO4) solutions was studied by EP
R and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. It is shown that the oxidation of the reagent w
ith potassium periodate in the presence of Ru(IV) proceeds through a radica
l mechanism that includes alternate steps of the oxidation and reduction of
the catalyst. The suggested mechanism of the catalytic oxidation of MDPASA
gave theoretical grounds to the conditions for the determination of ruthen
ium and iridium by kinetic methods that were selected previously on the bas
is of experimental data.
