G. Nikolaidis et al., PHYSICAL-FEATURES AND CHEMICAL-FEATURES IN THE COASTAL AREAS OF KAVALA AND ALEXANDROUPOLIS, NORTH AEGEAN SEA, Fresenius environmental bulletin, 6(1-2), 1997, pp. 60-65
Monthly measurements of temperature, salinity, chlorophyll - alpha and
nutrients were conducted during the period September 1991 - December
1992 in the coastal areas of Kavala and Alexandroupolis. Lower concent
rations of both nutrients and chlorophyll a were measured in Kavala co
mpared to those in Alexandroupolis. In both studied areas mean annual
values of N:P atomic ratio were relatively high (22.4 and 26.2 in Kava
la and Alexandroupolis, respectively) although 45.2% and 44.1% of the
measured values were lower than 15. This probably indicates a combined
effect of the coastal environment, influenced by man, and the pelagic
one which is known to be P limited (east Mediterranean Sea).
