Mossbauer spectroscopy is a useful technique to study the iron containing b
iological molecules and model compounds. This review considers the main res
ults of biomedical applications of Mossbauer spectroscopy and shows the var
ious possibilities of this technique to study qualitative (structural) and
quantitative changes of iron containing biomolecules during pathological pr
ocesses or under effect of environmental factors. Some structural differenc
es of pharmaceutically important biomolecules and model compounds revealed
with Mossbauer spectroscopy are also considered. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science
