K. Kumpulainen et M. Mutanen, The situated dynamics of peer group interaction: an introduction to an analytic framework, LEARN INSTR, 9(5), 1999, pp. 449-473
This paper introduces a descriptive system of analysis of peer group intera
ction. The method takes a dynamic and process-oriented approach to interact
ion which is seen as socially and situationally developed in students' mome
nt-by-moment interactions. By concentrating on individual and group functio
ning, the method aims at highlighting the situated dynamics of peer group i
nteraction and learning. The method consists of a three-dimensional analysi
s of peer group interaction by focusing on the functions of verbal interact
ion, and the nature of cognitive processing and social processing. These ar
e investigated with the help of micro-analytical maps drawn out from the da
ta based on video recordings, transcriptions, observations, interviews, and
questionnaires. Ln the first part of the paper the theoretical and methodo
logical background of the analysis will be discussed. That is followed by a
n introduction to the analysis method highlighted with empirical examples.
The paper ends with a reflective analysis of the method. (C) 1999 Elsevier
