The distribution of manganese in a crystallite of ZnMn0.1S has been examine
d by an unconventional method of laser scanning confocal fluorescence micro
scope. This technique permits to locate the position of fluorescent species
with a precision of 0.1 mu by optical sectioning of the crystallite and fu
rther it creates three-dimensional images of fluorescent species. In dilute
d manganese alloys, it is known that fluorescence is originated from 3d(5)
transitions of Mn, and therefore, we have visualized the distribution of Mn
is this alloy. It has been found that at the core of the crystallite (15 m
u to 40 mu), the concentration is practically constant; meanwhile at both e
dges then is a slow gradation of Mn concentration. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scienc
