Alkylation of W(OMe)(3)Cl-3 with ethyllithium and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethy
lenediamine (tmed) affords the tungsten ethene/hydride complex: [Li(tmed)](
3)-[WH(C2H4)(4)]. The anion possesses an approximate trigonal bipyramidal g
eometry with the hydride in an equatorial site. The ethene ligands exchange
with one another, presumably by means of a Berry pseudorotation process, b
ut exchange of ethene and hydride hydrogen atoms is slow on the NMR time sc
ale.
