Abstract
Vacuum furnaces designed for heat treatment must satisfy the quality a nd diversity-of-performance criteria demanded by industry. Any decisio ns by commercial or captive heat treaters to invest in new equipment s hould ensure the flexibility to address the heat treating requirements of the full range of materials anticipated in their operations. In re viewing applications, the author considers how a combination of rapid gas quenching capability and appropriate process controls can meet the se demands.
