Abstract
The paper presents investigations on adhesion strength between component la yers in a multi-layer coating. The coating selected for these investigation s was a TiC/Ti(C-x,N1-x)/TiN coating obtained by the vacuum-are method on a substrate of high-speed steel. The investigations are related to scratch-t ests, using a Rockwell indenter. The load on the sample surface varied betw een 0 and 100 N. Changes in the acoustic signal-AE and frictional force-Ft were recorded as a function of the indenter's load on the sample surface. M icroscopical observations of the scratches were carried out by an optical m icroscope Neophot 32. The results presented in the article showed that the scratch-test method allows determination of the adhesion between successive component layers in a multi-layer coating TiC/Ti(C-x,N1-x)/TiN. The values of these adhesion forces significantly depend on the chemical composition of the Ti(C-x,N1-x) layer and determine the destruction mechanism of a mult i-layer coating.
