A symmetrically substituted ytterbium bisphthalocyanine complex in com
mon organic solvents formed stable Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The s
urface pressure versus area isotherm of a Langmuir film on water subph
ase (pH ca. 5.4, 17 degrees C) has been investigated and an average ar
ea per molecule of 190 Angstrom(2) is measured. The optical absorption
increases linearly with the number of deposited layers. These films c
an be deposited in reproducible manner. The associated forms of the co
mpound and the particular orientation of R8YbPc2 molecular macrocycles
in LB films are determined by polarized ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS)
spectra. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
