Jr. Nielsen et T. Vedsmand, FISHERMEN ORGANIZATIONS IN FISHERIES MANAGEMENT - PERSPECTIVES FOR FISHERIES COMANAGEMENT BASED ON DANISH FISHERIES, Marine policy, 21(3), 1997, pp. 277-288
This paper examines the role of fishermen's organisations in the fishe
ries management decision-making process based on Danish experiences. T
he fishing industry world-wide is facing large challenges in the years
to come deriving from the management system, technology and the marke
t. These challenges cannot be met without the central fisheries admini
stration entering into a constructive dialogue with the user-groups, w
hich are often referred to as cc-management in the literature. A typol
ogy of fishermen's organisations is developed in order to emphasize th
e differences in motivation and capacity of fishermen's organisations
and evaluate their strategies and effectiveness in relation to partici
pation in fisheries cc-management institutions. The paper concludes wi
th a discussion on how the present performance of fishermen's organisa
tions meet future requirements related to fisheries management and mar
ket development. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
