Mitotic metaphase chromosomes of the scarab beetle Thorectes intermedius (C
osta) (Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae) were analyzed using various b
anding methods and fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) with a ribosoma
l probe. The results obtained indicate that silver and CMA(3) staining are
unable to localize the chromosome sites of nucleolar organizer regions (NOR
s). Such an inadequacy is a consequence of the extensive silver and CMA(3)
stainability of both constitutive heterochromatin and heterochromatin assoc
iated to the NORs.
