In some springs draining the carbonate aquifer of the Sierra de la Alfaguar
a an incipient precipitation of calcium carbonate occurs due to common-ion
effect. This process together with the CO2 outgassing of the water have ori
ginated travertines during the Quaternary. The travertines were deposited c
oinciding with warm and wet climatic periods and are currently at altitudes
higher than the springs as a result of the base level deepening through th
e tectonic uplift of the aquifer.
