A neutron diffraction measurement has been performed for molten TlCl, a mon
ovalent transition metal chloride, at 800 K. The radial distribution functi
on showed very broad peak owing to the large polarizability of the ions. Ho
wever, the ratio of the r value of the second peak to the first 1.43 seems
to show NaCl type local structure of the melt in spite of the CsCl type cry
stal structure. This finding has been supported by molecular dynamics calcu
lation.
