Ultrafiltration polysulfone membranes were modified with plasma of CO2. As
a result highly hydrophilic surfaces of acidic character were obtained. SEM
studies and pore size determination revealed that prolonged treatment caus
ed severe surface degradation, increase of pore size and widening of their
distribution. Water flux changes with treatment time, showing minimum Value
for 2 min. Excellent protein transport parameters of modified membranes we
re obtained, especially in basic solution. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. A
