Abstract
Cross-phase modulation impairment resonances exist in wavelength-division-m ultiplexed lightwave systems when channels are spared such that there occur s an integral number of bit walkthroughs per amplifier span. We have observ ed these resonances in transmission through 624-km standard single-mode fib er systems having amplifier span lengths of 40, 80, or 120 km, Q measuremen ts of a 2,5-Gb/s five-channel system over 8 x 80 km with +7 dBm/channel pre dict on-resonance bit-error rates (BER's) that are several orders of magnit ude higher than off-resonance BER's,
