paper describes three examples of learning environments that have been crea
ted for the Web to enable task-oriented learning. The environments describe
d in this paper allow students to develop and apply their skills and knowle
dge in a simulated environment. Three different environments are described;
each taken from a different discipline. They are supported by the technica
l infrastructure provided by the Clyde Virtual University which is an initi
ative sponsored by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council and has se
rved universities in the West of Scotland since 1995.
