Abstract
The stoichiometrical relationship between shore chain fatty acid production (SCFA) and gas formation in vitro mas examined far 55 feeds (15 dairy comp ounds, 25 feed components and 15 roughages) varying widely in their chemica l composition and nutritional quality. There was a very good agreement betw een gas volumes predicted by the amount of acetate, propionate, butyrate an d isobutyrate present in the system after 24 (R-2 = 0.95) and 48 h (R-2 = 0 .94) Of incubation and the actually measured gas volumes.
