Redox active triarylamine-modified polymers have been synthesized by c
opolymerization of diaryl-4-(1-trifluoromethylvinyl)aryl amines with e
ither 4-vinylpyridine or styrene. In the case of 4-vinylpyridine, redo
x active polyelectrolytes were generated by quaternization of the pyri
dine-nitrogens with methyl iodide followed by an ion exchange. Thus, e
lectrolyses can be performed without an added supporting electrolyte.
Both types of polymers have been applied successfully for the indirect
electrochemical oxidation of benzylic alcohol to benzaldehyde. (C) 19
