The structural investigation of the xMnO(100 - x)[2P(2)O(5). PbO)] vitreous
system with 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 50 mol% was re
alised using IR spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnet
ic susceptibility and photoacoustic (PA) measurements. The characteristic f
requencies of different atomic group vibrations were identified. The depend
ence of the position and shape of these bands with the MnO content of these
glasses was explained. The EPR and magnetic susceptibility data suggest th
at in these glasses the Mn ions exists only in divalent state; these ions a
re isolated or participate to dipole-dipole interactions. The concentration
dependence of the thermal diffusivity coefficient shows that complex struc
tural changes appear in these glasses for x less than or equal to 5 mol%, i
n agreement with IR and EPR data. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
