Nanosized lead titanate (PT) powders have been successfully prepared via a
novel mechanochemical synthesis route, which skips the phase-forming calcin
ation at a temperature in the range of 700 degrees C to 800 degrees C that
is always required for the solid state reaction. The novel fabrication tech
nique uses the low-cost and widely available oxide powders as the starting
materials, and the formation of designed PT perovskite phase is triggered b
y mechanical activation instead of calcination at an elevated temperature.
Upon mechanochemically activation for more than 10 h, a well dispersed powd
er consisting of PT particles of 20-30 nm in size was obtained. (C) 1999 El
