Redescription and synonymy of Plagiochila aerea Taylor 1846 (Hepaticae), first described as Lycopodium pinnatum by Lamarck 1792

Plagiochila aerea Taylor is redescribed and figured in detail. Numerous syn onyms including new synonymy of 10 species and of in 12 fraspecific taxa ar e established based on type studies. Eight names including Lycopodium pinna tum Lam, are newly lectotypified. Plagiochila cuneata Lindenb. & Gottsche, P. bicuspidata Gottsche (the latter two newly lectotypified), P. cobana Ste ph. and FI steyermarkii H.Rob. are excluded from the synonymy of P. aerea. The distribution of P. aerea in the Neotropics is documented and reports fr om outside the Neotropics are rejected.
