The excitation spectra of doubly magic nuclei are described by the random-p
hase-approximation which is computed self-consistently employing the same S
kyrme force as was used for the underlying ground state. The present status
of the capability of Skyrme forces to describe giant resonances is discuss
ed. There is still large freedom in the choice of the isovector parts of th
e force. It will be worked out how information from giant resonances, inclu
ding those in exotic nuclei can help to fix these less known pieces.
