We suggest several ways to study properties of the symmetry term in the nuc
lear equation of state, EOS, from collective modes in beta-unstable nuclei.
After a general discussion on compressibility and saturation density in as
ymmetric nuclear matter we show some predictions on the collective response
based on the solution of generalized Landau dispersion relations. Isoscala
r-isovector coupling, disappearance of collectivity and possibility of new
instabilities in low and high density regions are discussed with accent on
their relation to the symmetry term of effective forces. The onset of chemi
cal plus mechanical instabilities in a dilute asymmetric nuclear matter is
discussed with reference to new features in fragmentation reactions.
