Abstract
We show that, in a chi((2)) material, a backward injected signal beam under goes an automatic pi phase shift in a phase-matched cascaded parametric int eraction in the presence of a forward injected pump beam. This type of inte raction, compared with the previously proposed copropagative cascaded param etric interaction configurations, is shown to have more flexibility for sig nal processing.
