We find from our measurements that the decay rate of Be-7 implanted in Au i
s lower than that implanted in Al2O3 by a relatively large amount (0.72 +/-
0.07)%. This result and others have been analyzed quantitatively using the
linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) method and Hartree's calculations. Our re
sults are important for accurately extracting the nuclear matrix element of
the astrophysically significant Be-7 + e(-)--> Li-7 + v reaction. (C) 1999
