The micro amount of chromium(III) catalyses the oxidation of tellurium(IV)
by cerium(IV) in acid medium which proceeds through substrate catalyst comp
lex. The effectiveness of catalyst is maximum in the mixture of acids (HClO
4, + H2SO4) compared to the individual acids. The active species of cerium(
lV), tellurium(IV) and chromium(III) are understood to be as H3Ce(SO4)(4)(-
) TeO(OH)(+) and Cr3+. SO42- respectively under the reaction conditions stu
died, and the possible mechanisms are discussed.
