The influence of temperature on the autophoretic coating's formation from c
arboxylated butadiene-styrene copolymer on steel samples was investigated i
n the range 0-60 degrees C. Above 20 degrees C, film destruction processes
begin to take place. A kinetic equation is proposed to describe both proces
ses of formation and destruction of the film. The apparent activation energ
y of about 20 kJ mol(-1) for the film growth process is in agreement with t
he proposed mechanism for which the rate-determining step is the diffusion
of iron ions through the film. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights re
