This special issue is devoted to surface treatments by plasmas and ion
beams. Such treatments are performed in order to increase metallic su
rface hardness and resistance to corrosion For polymer surfaces, the p
lasma treatments are asked to increase the surface activity before coa
ting deposition The plasma treatments are also concerned by surface cl
eaning to satisfy to condition of a good coating adhesion. Another cha
llenge of plasma treatments is in non polluting process taking some im
portance in the next future to replace the existing chemical baths. Co
ntrol of plasma treatments is a need in all the step processes from su
bstrate surface cleaning to coating deposition. In this issue, the two
papers of ''Science'' Section present results on TiCN and TiN coating
controlled by emission spectroscopy for the first an performed by ion
implantation for the second. The two papers of the ''Industrie'' sect
ion discuss on polymer surface adhesion and on ion nitriding/carburizi
ng of metal surface.
