Abstract
This article provides a guide on the criminal justice system in England and Wales to assist psychiatrists who are asked to prepare reports on people s ubject to criminal proceedings. It describes which sections of the Mental H ealth Act 1983 are relevant at different stages of the criminal justice pro cess.
