Abstract
System dependent effects in resolving vibrational fine structure in the cor n-level lines of adsorbates are discussed. The example is carbon monoxide o n transition metals. The importance of dynamic metallic screening is exempl ified and the role of shake-up processes is discussed. The possible spin co nfigurations and the magnetic state of the core-ionized adsorbate in the fi nal state are investigated in terms of exchange splittings and the results extended within the equivalent core approximation to the ground state prope rties of adsorbed NO.
