Abstract
A general theory for all magneto-optical effects for independent particles which relies on deriving the dielectric tensor of a ferrofluid is proposed. The known results are found as particular cases and are discussed. Results for linear and circular birefringence are given. The effective field shoul d replace the applied field in the case of interacting particles. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
