Abstract
Volvatellin (4) is a highly unstable terpene isolated from the extracts of the Indian opisthobranch mollusk Volvatella sp. The structure and the relat ive stereochemistry of 4 were determined by NMR methods. The paper also des cribes a hypothetical biosynthesis of 4 starting from the alga-derived caul erpenyne.
