Abstract
Glucose transport is acutely stimulated by hypoxia through enhanced GLUT-I and GLUT-4 glucose transporter function. GLUT-I expression is also stimulat ed by hypoxia or azide. Moreover, hypoxia per se, acting through hypoxia-in ducible factor I, enhances GLUT-1 transcription. GLUT-1 is the first gene w hose transcription is dually stimulated in response to hypoxia and inhibiti on of oxidative phosphorylation.
