The present study was undertaken to investigate the extent to which scales
measuring four categories of influences predict whether students maintain t
heir motivation to achieve a long-term goal such as college graduation. Dat
a from 779 students in parallel studies were then compared using a path ana
lysis to ascertain whether scales for these same four categories of variabl
es were useful as predictors that could influence graduation from both two-
year colleges and four-year colleges.
