The atomic geometry of the (1 X 2) Bi reconstruction on the InAs(110) surfa
ce has been fully determined by means of grazing incidence x-ray diffractio
n. The (1 X 2) Bi phase is characterized by couples of unequivalent Bi chai
ns bonded alternatively to In and As atoms. The chains are strongly buckled
with respect to the (110) InAs plane and they can easily accommodate if th
e InAs(110) substrate presents alternate missing rows in the [1-10] directi
on. [S0163-1829(99)00116-2].
