Thin films of alpha-Mn were epitaxially grown on MgO(111) single-crystallin
e substrates at elevated temperatures in order to suppress the growth of me
tastable Mn phases previously reported. The alpha-Mn films were observed to
have (110) texture, consistent with bcc (110) growth in Kurdjumov-Sachs or
ientation on the fee (111) substrate surface, with additional twinning. The
structural features observed for alpha-Mn(110) resemble those of metastabl
e "expanded" Mn, indicating a possible connection between the two phases.
