Lessons learned from the management of civilian and wartime vascular injuri
es have established an important framework for the treatment of arterial an
d venous injuries, Nevertheless, evolving principles and techniques that ar
e forming the basis of the new field of endovascular surgery are now provid
ing additional options for the treatment of vascular trauma that supplement
the traditional approaches of classic operative repair. Expeditious treatm
ent at the time of diagnostic angiography, improved access to anatomically
challenging target lesions, and an associated reduction of morbidity and mo
rtality are the potential advantages of transcatheter-based therapy for the
injured vessel.
