Abstract
The oxidation of 2,2'-(m-phenylene)bis(4,5-diphenylimidazole) 1 with potass ium ferricyanide in benzene-aqueous KOH heterogeneous solution gave two dim ers 2 and 3; 2 piezochromic and photochromic dimer whose structure is deduc ed by NMR as an anti isomer of 3, 3. photochromic dimer with syn-[3.3]metac yclophane structure elucidated by X-ray structural analysis. Photolysis (>3 10 nm) of these dimers in frozen CH2Cl2-MTHF (8 : 1) produced the same trip let species which can be assignable as 2, 2'-(m-phenylene)bis(4,5-diphenyli midazole-2-yl) diradical.
