Designing molecular species that can spontaneously self-assemble:into well-
defined structures paves the way to material systems with wide a range of a
pplications. For:his reason, hybrid molecular systems based on the combinati
on of conjugated organic polymers and redox- active transition metals is of
current interest. Conjugated heterocyclic polymeric systems, poly(2,2'-bip
yridine 5,5'-vinylene) and poly[rutheniumbis(bipyridine)(2,2'-bipyridine 5,
5'-vinylene)] have been synthesized and characterized by TGA, FT-IR and UV-
VIS in conjunction with microanalysis. The latter is obtained from the poly
merization reaction directly as a blue-black solid with lambda max of 600 n
m and an inherent conductivity of 4.5x10(-6)Scm(-1), the former on the othe
r hand, is a reddish-brown solid with lambda max of 380 nm and fluorescence
maximum at 535 nm using 380 nm excitation wavelength. The undoped polymer
is an insulator and p doping with AuCl3/CH3CN, I-2 and NOPF6 did not have a
ny effect on the conductivity.
