Abstract
High tenacity, high modulus electrically conducting Polyaniline (PAn) compo site fibers are prepared from air-gap spinning of lyotropic PAn/poly(p-phen ylene terephthalamide), PPD-T, sulfuric acid solutions. For example, tenaci ty and modulus are in the range of 16 gpd and 270 gpd, respectively for 30 w.% PAn composite fiber. PAn is finely dispersed around PPD-T domains and i s oriented parallel to fiber axis, PAn is also sulfonated during the proces sing and does not require external doping to render the fibers conductive. Electrical conductivity of the fibers continue to turn on even at the conce ntration as low as below 5 w.% PAn. The fiber containing 30 w.% PAn has con ductivity in the range of 0.1 S/cm.
