Ozone decomposition kinetics was determined for surface water in batch and
continuous flow reactors. Reaction rates in the continuous flow experiments
were higher than those determined from batch experiments. The difference w
as attributed to a variable instantaneous ozone demand. Ozone reaction in b
atch experiments was described with the n-th order kinetics. The order of r
eaction (with respect to ozone concentration) varied from 0.4 to 2 dependin
g on the ozone dose transferred to water before each batch test. Specific r
eaction rate was proposed as a measurable parameter characterizing transfor
mations of ozone-reactive compounds. The changes in reaction order suggeste
d an increase of the reactivity of the products of ozonation. (C) 1999 Else
