La metal and silicon react at 950 degrees C in the presence of LaBr3 to for
m LaSi with the hitherto unknown low temperature modification (1T-LaSi). 1T
-LaSi crystallizes in Cmcm with a = 456.21(2), b = 1348.03(5), c = 662.59(6
) pm. The Si atoms are connected to form cis-trans-cis-trans chains with al
ternating distances of d(Si-Si) = 248 and 260 pm. They are coordinated in a
trigonal prismatic fashion by the La atoms. 1T-LaSi shows metallic conduct
ivity.
