A variational principle is formulated for a body containing a crack in equi
librium. An expression for the driving force acting on the crack admitting
nontangential virtual crack extensions is derived. As a consequence of a va
riational principle, crack equilibrium criterion under mixed-mode loading c
onditions is obtained. For general 3-D problems, the magnitude as well as t
he direction of the driving force are precisely determined. Fracture locus
for three combined modes is calculated.
