Abstract
Our previous publications have dealt with the angular momentum formalism of both linear and circularly polarized photons in (gamma, x) reactions on bo th polarized and unpolarized targets, and the inverse (capture) reactions i nitiated by polarized beams. In the present work, utilizing the general for malism of Welton, we deal with the linear polarization of the gamma-rays wh ich are produced in capture reactions on unpolarized targets, including the possibility of having incident polarized spin 1/2 projectiles. These captu re reactions are denoted by a((x) over right arrow, (L) over right arrow)c, where (x) over right arrow is the incident polarized spin 1/2 projectile a nd (L) over right arrow represents the outgoing polarized gamma-ray. We pre sent here the formalism in a convenient form, display a sample table of coe fficients, and illustrate its use by means of several examples. A FORTRAN c ode will be made available for generating similar coefficients for other re actions. (C) 1999 Academic Press.
