The reaction CrO3 + 2NH(4)X --> CrO2 + 2 NH3 + H2O + X-2 (X = Br, I), which
occurs quantitatively at 120-150 degrees C, provides a convenient method f
or the synthesis of CrO2; unlike conventional methods, the method reported
here does not require the use of high pressure for the synthesis of this te
chnologically important material.
