Abstract
The lyotropic cholesteic liquid crystalline phase was observed in the dichl oroacetic acid solutions of the three chitosans with different molecular we ights from 2.34 X 10(6) to 0.44 X 10(6) but with the same degree of deacety lation, The critical concentration of chitosan decreased when its molecular weight increased and was higher than chitin with the same degree of polyme rization, The value of average pitch obtained by both small angle light sca ttering and polarized microscopy decreased when the molecular weight of chi tosan increased.
